HOMESTEADING FOR TODAY
WHAT IS HOMESTEADING?
According to the Oxford dictionary historically a homestead was an area of land-usually 160 acres granted to a settler in the West as a home. Homesteading then referred to life as a settler on their homestead. In those days families had to be self-sufficient to survive: if they didn't grow it, raise it, make it or build it then they generally had to do without.
WHY DO IT?
Today we can, depending on our means, buy pretty much anything we need and want. But our generation is becoming more and more concerned about the rising costs, environmental impact and health concerns about the food and other items we are buying and supporting with our hard earned incomes. This has resulted in a big movement to get back to our roots and incorporate homesteading or elements of homesteading into our lives. This is allowing us to have more control over our health, finances and the environment by becoming more self-sufficient and self-reliant. You don't have to live on a farm to be a modern Homesteader; now we are also talking about Urban Homesteading and Suburban Homesteading to describe getting back to more natural ways of living even if you live in a town or city.
HOW DO I START?
There are no right or wrong ways to start Homesteading-no matter what your income or living situation anyone can incorporate as many or few elements as they feel comfortable with. You could start by hanging your clothes out to dry or use a drying rack instead of using a clothes dryer or grow tomatoes in pots on your balcony, you could learn to knit, crochet or sew. You can go further by growing an organic garden if you have the room, canning and preserving your harvest, composting, using rain barrels, raising chickens etc. If you have property or an acreage you might consider raising goats, having a market garden, keeping bees, planting an orchard, using solar panels and/or wind power, maybe building your own energy efficient home...the possibilities are exciting and endless!
